How it started

From a bakery on the plaça de s'Aigua in Artà to the ARTÀsanes biscuits: how frozen bread nearly ended the business and what the Navarro Peset family did about it.

Four turning points

  1. 1988

    A bakery on the square

    Pep Navarro opens a village bakery on the plaça de s'Aigua in Artà. That is where the name comes from: the bakery on the square. Bread, ensaimadas, and whatever a village asks for each morning.

  2. The 2000s

    Frozen bread nearly finished it

    Part-baked frozen bread reaches everywhere, at a price a village bakery cannot match. The business came close to closing.

  3. Around 2013

    Emilio starts on the biscuits

    The son and grandson of bakers, Emilio decides the way out is not to compete on bread but to make something nobody else was making: a 100 % natural oil biscuit, no preservatives, no colourings, olive oil, vegan. The ARTÀsanes are born.

  4. Today

    Five partners, sixteen people

    The company belongs to the family in equal shares: the parents and the three children. Sixteen people work in the bakery, in sales and in administration. The house gató won the Mallorca Artisan Food Award in 2021.

The company belongs to five people in equal shares. Each one holds up a part of the business, and each one turned up to the photo with their own thing under their arm.

    Inventor of the Galletes d'oli ARTÀsanes. Inventive, hard-working, reliable, and falls in love easily. Likes hiking out in nature.

GAYetes ARTÀsanes

Our business suffered an act of vandalism. Someone painted the word “GAY” across our van.

Rather than let hatred win, we decided to turn it around and make it an opportunity to say plainly that there is nothing wrong with being gay. We made t-shirts, badges and cotton bags to carry a message of love, respect and acceptance. We believe in an inclusive society, where every person can be who they are.
